טאַטע־מאַמעס כּתובה און חתונה־בילד

מײַן טאַטע, אַבֿרהם באָרסיקאָווסקי, איז געבוירן געוואָרן אין לאָדזש, פּוילן אין 1898 און אימיגרירט קיין קובאַ וווּ ער האָט געגרינדעט אַ געשעפֿט פֿון תּשמישי־קדושה. בײַם דערוויסן זיך אַז ער האָט ווײַטע קרובֿים אין ניו־יאָרק איז ער אַהין געפֿאָרן און אָנגעקומען צו זײַנע באָבע־זיידע.

נישט וויסנדיק אַז עס געפֿינט זיך אַ גאַסט אין הויז, איז זייער טאָכטער, קייט בעיעקאָפֿסקי, וואָס האָט זיך ערשט געהאַט אָפּגעשפּריצט, אַרײַנגעקומען אין צימער מיט אַ האַנטעך אויפֿן קאָפּ. אפֿשר דערפֿאַר האָבן זיי זיך אַזוי גיך פֿאַרליבט?

נישט לאַנג נאָך דעם האָבן זיי באַשלאָסן חתונה צו האָבן און זיך באַזעצן אין קובאַ. מע האָט פּלאַנירט אַ קנסמאָל אָבער דערנאָך באַשלאָסן נישט צו וואַרטן מער און אין גיכן חתונה געהאַט. טאַקע דערפֿאַר טראָגט מײַן מאַמע נישט קיין חופּה־קלייד.

אין דער לעצטער מינוט האָט די מאַמע זיך באַרעכנט, אַז זי קען נישט פֿאַרלאָזן איר משפּחה. איז דער טאַטע צוריקגעפֿאָרן קיין קובאַ, פֿאַרקויפֿט דאָס געשעפֿט און זיי האָבן זיך באַזעצט אין קווינס, ניו־יאָרק וווּ זיי האָבן דערצויגן דרײַ קינדער און זעקס אייניקלעך.

זייער כּתובה און חתונה־בילד זענען מיר ביזן הײַנטיקן טאָג זייער נאָענט צום האַרצן.

My Parents’ Marriage Contract and Wedding Picture

My father, Abraham Borsykowsky, was born in Lodz, Poland in 1898 and relocated by himself to Cuba, where he started a business selling Jewish religious items. Hearing that he had distant relatives in NYC, he travelled and visited my grandparent’s home. Not knowing there was a guest in the house, their daughter, Kate Bejekofsky, who had just taken a shower, walked into the room with a towel wrapped around her head. Love at first sight, perhaps?

Shortly thereafter they decided to marry and move to Cuba. They planned an engagement party but changed that to a wedding, which is why this wedding picture doesn’t show my mother in a traditional wedding gown. At the last minute, though, my mother decided she could not leave her family so my father returned to Cuba to liquidate his business and they settled in Queens, NY where they lived their lives near their three children and six grandchildren.

I cherish their wedding picture and ketuba.
